Jesus is #Amazing.

There is a verse that describes the feeling of the people as they listened and watched Jesus. While Jesus was teaching, the friends of a paralysed man lowered him through the roof of the building where everyone was gathered. As the paralysed man lay on his bed, he was lowered right where Jesus was, at His feet; but the amazing part was actually what Jesus did.

An overwhelming astonishment and ecstasy seized them all, and they recognised and praised and thanked God; and they were filled with and controlled by reverential fear and kept saying, We have seen wonderful and strange and incredible and unthinkable things today!  Luke 5:26 Amplified Bible

This feeling of overwhelming astonishment that can seize a person was not only for a time when Jesus was on earth and people witnessed His actions firsthand by being with Him and seeing Him. Jesus is still doing amazing things among us today that we can say without a doubt it could only be Jesus.

…be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.  Habakkuk 1:5

This was certainly true in Habukkuk’s day, and true today, that God through His Son Jesus is going to do something amazing in our church and in our lives. Why this amazing thing?

Mark recorded in his gospel (Mark 16:15,20) that Jesus said to go into all the world to preach the good news and the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that accompanied it. Signs and wonders that follow the preaching of His message demonstrate all of God’s attributes so when people see and hear and believe they experience God as we have experienced Him.

Luke brings attention to this story of the paralysed man and the people’s reaction (Luke 5:17-26) because, what happened, no doctor can achieve. It is only God who can change a person’s life and that is why those present said, “We have seen amazing things today!” Luke 5:26.

Jesus is amazing and this is why we need to tell everyone:

Jesus has the power to heal
Even in the ministry of Jesus there seemed to be ebbs and flows in terms of healing. Sometimes, when there was unbelief, Jesus healed fewer people (Matthew 13:58). At other times, as we read here, ‘The power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal those who were sick’ (Luke 5:17).  Jesus still heals the sick today!

Jesus has the authority to forgive sins
We tend to find healings amazing. But we can take the forgiveness of sins for granted. Jesus demonstrates here that forgiveness is even more amazing and awesome than healing. He first forgives the man’s sin (Luke 5:20) and then shows that He has the authority to do so by healing him (Luke 5:24). Forgiveness was the priority.

Jesus has the ability to understand what is in hearts and minds hearts and minds
Jesus perceived what was in their minds. He knew what they were thinking in their hearts (Luke 5:22). Forgiving those who have sinned is something only God can do. When Jesus claimed authority to forgive their sins, in their hearts they accused him of ‘blasphemy’ (Luke 5:21a), ‘Who can forgive sins but God alone?’ (Luke 5:21b). Jesus is all-knowing.

Jesus loves everyone
Jesus’ choice of Levi the tax collector as His follower was amazing. He chose a despised employee of Rome. But He made the right choice. Levi ‘got up, left everything and followed him’ (Luke 5:28). He then gave a great banquet for Jesus at his house and a large crowd came. Levi was clearly an influential leader. People were fascinated by what had happened to him and wanted to meet Jesus.

Jesus is no respecter of persons
Once again Jesus amazed people. They asked, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and “sinners”?’ (Luke 5:30). Jesus replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance’ (Luke 5:31–32). This is the heart of the good news for all of us.

Have you wondered how people must have felt when they heard Jesus teach and saw Him perform a miracle?

We should always come to church with an expectancy that amazing things are going to happen among us. When we are in His presence and encounter Him, our lives change. No wonder the people were filled with awe when they saw that Jesus truly is amazing.

Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.” Luke 5:26
